Clean Clear Skin – Choosing the right cleanser, like choosing a moisturizer and mask, is determined by your skin type. You may also need to consider the time of the year, as your skin typically changes with the seasons. Usually, skin gets oilier in the summer and drier in the winter, so you will likely need to change your cleanser each season.
Think about what you truly need in a cleanser. Do you need something anti-bacterial? You do if you are cleansing skin that is acne- or eczema-prone. However, dont stress too much over your cleanser. Cleansers remain on the skin for less than a minute with each cleaning as opposed to moisturizer or eye cream, which lay on the skin for eight hours or more. Therefore, establish the rest of your skin care routine first, and then choose a cleanser, rather than the other way around.
Get Your Cleanser
Her are a few examples of inexpensive cleansers that I may recommend:
SkinCeuticals: Gentle Cleanser
SkinCeuticals: Simply Clean (popular spring and summer cleanser)
SkinCeuticals: Clarifying Cleanser (oily-acne prone skin)
Skin Medica: Facial Cleanser
Sulfur/Erythromycin/Clindamycin: Acne-prone skin
If your skin is particularly acne-prone, choose cleansers that contain salicylic acid or an antibiotic. When it comes time to splashing your face with water, I recommend following one of my favorite sayings Everything in moderation. Not too hot, not too cold, not too much, not too little. Neither hot water nor extreme cold water is good for your face despite what Joan Crawford said about dunking her face in a bowl of ice water. Both extremes in temperature are sure to break delicate blood vessels and capillaries. Luke warm or tepid water is best for rinsing the face.
Best Way To Exfoliate Your Face
Did you know that your skin sheds its dead skin cells on a daily basis? In fact, each time you vacuum you are picking up dead skin cells off the floor, the chair and the wall, etc. Its true. In fact, even while you sleep, your own body is doing its job, ensuring your skin exfoliates itself, without your help. Still, some days, you want to glow as much as possible. For those times, I recommend undergoing a more invasive cosmetic service like mircrodermabrasion, which is a medically administered physical exfoliation of the skin.
No More Puff Stuff
I often share with patients, depending on their skin type, that using products or devices such as loofahs, buff puffs and washcloths may prove too irritating to the skin. I also discourage using these products as they can easily become a fertile ground for bacterial growth. After all, how often do we actually wash out these things? What really happens is the loofah, buff puff or wash clothe end up sitting and gathering bacteria. These abrasive devices often stay in the damp shower or basin, creating a perfect breeding ground on which bacteria can grow. Then, you pick up this bacteria-laden scrubber/loofah and rub it onto your face. This is a recipe for disaster. A few days, or even hours, one can develop a severe skin irritation or rash, possibly leading to an infection. Consequently, I do not advocate exfoliating for every skin type although, it may be helpful for individuals with oily skin.
