If you have acne then it’s very important that you know how to look after yourself on the inside and on the outside so that you don’t make your acne problem worst. There are many over the counter products available specifically developed to control and prevent acne breakouts. So, which products and applications are helpful, and which could actually be harmful to your skin?
1. Washing and Cleansing
Your daily washing and cleansing regimen is crucial in the control and prevention of acne. For this reason you need to choose your acne products carefully. The enduring and most basic of products to wash and cleanse the skin with is soap. However, most commercial soaps are perfumed and contain chemicals that can irritate your skin and cause breakouts. If your skin is oily, use soaps that have little or no oil contained in them. Soap oil will clog up your pores and worsen your acne condition. It is much better to use an acne cleanser that is suitable for your skin type and acne condition.
2. Cosmetics
These can cause acne or worsen your existing problem. Some cosmetics when applied to the skin clog the pores and irritate the skin causing acne breakouts. Always read the label on the product before you purchase. Use cosmetics that are labelled noncomedogenic, a water base and not an oil base cosmetic, as oil can clog up your pores. Examine the label for chemicals that can cause most skin irritation and inflammation – Mineral oil, Lanolin, Parabens, and Propylene glycol.
Use cosmetics sparingly and always remove at the end of your day. If a product irritates your skin then stop using it immediately.
3. Health & Exercise
The exact cause of acne is unknown but factors like stress and a bad diet can make your acne problem worse. Make sure that you eat a healthy diet and get adequate sleep. If you have back acne; make sure to change your bed linen regularly. Don’t use fabric softener in your laundry wash as this can cause skin irritation. Take daily exercise to help you relax and get rid of your stress.
Best practice for acne is to stick to a daily hygiene regimen. Try using one product brand, as a specific line of products is developed to work together for best results. If over the counter products are not working for you then consult your doctor.
