Acne can be found in many forms. Papules, which are usually characterized by small pink bumps, painful to the touch; Pustules or pimples, pus filled lesions that can be red, Nodules which are lesions lodged deep within the skin and finally Cysts, possibly the most painful form of the disorder, are usually responsible for scarring. Doesnt sound fun, does it? Good thing there are ways to prevent the problem, but first you must understand what causes it to form.

Doctors are unsure of the exact cause of this disorder, but many believe it to be due to several different reasons. During puberty, in both males and females, an increase in hormones called androgens cause the sebaceous glands to enlarge, thereby producing more sebum. Additionally, hormonal changes due to pregnancy can also cause this skin disorder. Genetics also seem to play a role in the formation, meaning the tendency to develop it can stem from whether your parents had it or not. Pore-clogging cosmetics and certain drugs (Lithium, for example) have also been known to make the situation even worse.

What can make it worse? Well, for starters, friction. Rubbing, excessive scrubbing, or leaning on the skin, especially your face, can lead to an increase. However, chocolate and greasy foods do not cause this problem. Neither does stress nor dirty skin. Its nice to know we can still enjoy a chocolate bar without worrying about a gigantic pimple cropping up!

If you suffer from this problem, know that you are not alone. People from all age groups and races can get it, from adolescents to even adults.

It is often treated by dermatologists, who are doctors trained specifically in skincare. While very good at treating all types, they specialize in treating more severe cases. For moderate cases, seeing your primary physician should be sufficient. Stopping scarring, psychological distress and prevention, while also healing preexisting problems, are the main goals of any practitioner. Your doctor will discuss with you treatment options, and whether over the counter, prescription drugs or a combination of both will be the most effective treatment for your particular case.

Theres no doubt that its embarrassing, not to mention unsightly. To avoid any reoccurrence, especially if you are using anything to treat the condition, be sure you follow a few key steps:

Wash your face twice a day with a mild cleanser, and do not scrub too hard. Also, try to stay away from pore clogging makeup and cosmetics, because that will have a detrimental effect on your skin. Avoid excessive exposure to sunlight as much as possible, and if you must go out wear a mild sunscreen to prevent burning.

With these tips in mind, you should be well on your way to acne-free skin in no time./pbr

While shopping around for acne products, I found myself at a booth in the local mall, signing up for a two month program. Along with the basic three products, there was a bonus in the box, a mask containing, amongst other things, 6% sulfur. In addition to its use as a ten-minute mask, the directions also encouraged using the mask in small amounts on problem spots as an overnight treatment. After three nights of trial, it was my new favourite product, so I began looking into the uses of sulfur as an acne treatment.

According to many reports, sulfur (also spelled “sulphur”) has been used in acne treatments since the days of Ancient Rome when people used to bathe in hot, sulfurous mineral water. As a chemical element, sulfur is odorless, but when combined with other elements it can have a strong, unpleasant smell. With the emergence of benzoyl peroxide in the 1920s, the focus turned to new chemicals, and sulfur was somewhat eclipsed by several other substances in the campaign against acne. Although slightly less popular, many acne products used today still include sulfur. So why is it so amazing for acne?

Acne is often referred to as a disease of the sebaceous glands, tiny glands that are critical for normal skin functioning. The sebaceous glands secrete sebum, a combination of fats and debris from dead skin cells which lubricates and protects the skin against environmental damage. Sebum travels to the skin’s surface via a hair follicle and pore. Sometimes, however, a pore can become blocked, which means that sebum and natural skin bacteria are prevented from coming to the surface. The bacteria within the clogged pore can be very irritating to the skin, triggering an immune reaction and causing the redness and inflammation often associated with acne.

Acne treatments can take several different types of approaches. Some address the reasons behind the blocked pore, such as excess sebum production or inadequate shedding of dead skin cells. Others work at reducing the symptoms of pain and redness. Treatments include hormone therapy, oral antibiotics, retinoids, and topical creams and ointments, which can be very effective and quite inexpensive. It is in topical treatments that sulfur is generally used.

Sulfur is a keratolytic agent, which means that it encourages shedding of dead skin cells which could block pores if retained. It also has comedolytic effects, helping to heal pre-existing comedones and preventing formation of new ones. For these reasons, sulfur is a frequent ingredient in cleansers and masks like the one that I tried. Even more popular is the combination of sulfur with sodium sulfacetamide, a sulfonamide that has antibacterial properties. Sulfonamides are thought to prevent bacterial growth through limiting key acids needed for their reproduction. Together, sulfur and sodium sulfacetamide are extremely effective in reducing inflammatory lesions and in preventing acne development.

While the mask that I tried was great as a bi-weekly acne product, it was its ability to reduce inflammation overnight that impressed me the most. Some studies suggest that sulfur may calm or soothe acne, but I suspect that it was only when combined with the other ingredients (such as geranium extract and tea tree leaf oil) that it was so effective. Sulfur is definitely useful in acne products, especially for its kerolytic and comedolytic properties, however be sure to check that the product has anti-inflammatory ingredients as well if you’re looking for a nighttime treatment. Also, check with a dermatologist or skin care professional before leaving a product on overnight, unless it expressly recommends it on the directions…I didn’t read the directions properly once, and I will never make that mistake again!!

Acne is an inflammatory skin disease that can occur in any age but mostly in the period of puberty. This skin problem originates from the root of the hair follicles where they are associated with sebaceous glands. Such structures are called as pilosebaceous glands. When the blood circulating in these glands is impure, then it causes eruptions on the surface of the skin. These eruptions are commonly called as pimples or zits.

What are the causes of acne?

? Improper or faulty diet

? More sexual desires in adolescence

? Deficiency of vitamin A

? Menstrual problems, such as irregular or delayed periods

What should be the diet to cure acne?

? Eat green leafy vegetables. This will provide the cellulose for roughage, which takes care of proper movement of bowels

? Avoid spicy and sugary food. Keep your diet a perfect balance of foods with different tastes.

? Include fresh fruits in your diet. This will build up proper water content in your body, which will make the blood purer.

? Do not eat fatty, deep fried, high sugar content food and milk products

? Drink 8-10 glasses of water daily

Do’s and don’t for acne

? Protect the affected area from harmful rays of sun and also don’t wash your face frequently and keep your skin dry.

? Prefer using mild natural cleanser for skin cleaning to prevent acne growth.

? Try to expose your skin to fresh air and sunlight. This will help in opening the pores on the skin and lead to better circulation

? Avoid any type of stress. Stress can release more hormones, which would exacerbate the acne. Do those activities only which you like most.

Acne skin care through home recipes

? Prepare a paste of orange peels and apply on the affected area.

? Squeeze indian plum or jambola in water and this paste must be applied on the affected part. This is more effective in the pimples that appear in early youth.

? You can also prepare a mixture of nutmeg and red sandalwood in water. Apply this mixture on the face.

? Prepare a paste of either turmeric and neem leaves or turmeric and sandalwood paste also gives relief from acne

? You can also apply grated potatoes on affected area to get relief from acne pain and inflammation.

? Apply garlic paste on the affected area. It will help the acne to dry living no scars.

? You can also boil tulasi (holy basil) leaves on water. Cool it and apply on effected area with cotton, it is beneficial for acne treatment

How ayurveda helps in acne cure?

There are few herbs that are found to be beneficial in the treatment of acne. They are:

? Mint leaves (Pudina): The leaves of pudina have good cooling properties, and are commonly used as anti-inflammatory agent.

? Papaya: It has excellent properties for reducing pimples by direct application on them.

? Turmeric (Haldi): It is also commonly used for all skin ailments, including psoriasis

? Sandalwood (Chandan): It has also very cooling effects and its mild fragrance brings freshness to the affected part. It purifies the blood and prevents further outbreaks of acne.

Acne is a common skin condition which can give you blackheads, whiteheads, red or yellow spots, scars and greasy skin. It affects about 80% of people at some time in their lives. It can affect men and women but is more common in women. Acne typically affects the skin on the face, neck, back, chest and arms. It can be mild or severe.

Acne relief treatments are used to prevent new spots from forming, to treat those already on the skin and to prevent any scarring. It can take time to get rid of acne – it isn’t going to disappear overnight – so you need to be patient.

Acne can be very embarrassing and a sufferer will want to treat the condition as soon as they can. The important thing to realize is that acne varies greatly from person to person. Just because one treatment can rid one person of their acne, does not mean the same treatment will work on another person. In fact, it could make the acne worse.

Fortunately, there are a number of remedies you can try. These include over the counter medications and oral antibiotics. You can get these treatments in various strengths depending on the type, severity and location of your acne. Bear in mind that medicines can cause burning, irritation or redness and it can take up to six weeks before you can see an improvement in your acne.

For some sufferers, changing their diet (to include more zinc, Vitamin E, Vitamin A and magnesium) can work. Taking a daily multivitamin tablet is a good idea. Tea tree oil works for some people too, as does applying lemon juice or honey as a cleaner, then rinsing it off. Aloe Vera is also worth a try. You should exfoliate your face twice a week to remove dead skin cells, using a gentle sugar scrub – don’t use anything containing crushed kernels or almonds because these can tear the skin.

Dehydration and poor blood circulation can make acne worse so drinking plenty of fluids and taking exercise can be beneficial. If you have long hair, wear it tied back, and try not to pick at or touch your acne. If you suffer from acne on your back, avoid tight-fitting clothes, especially those made from artificial materials such as spandex, because they make you sweat which irritates the acne.

There are special acne cleansers on the market which might help. Look for the words non-comedogenic or oil-free on the packaging. When you clean your face, make sure your fingers are clean before you touch your acne.

If your acne is severe or does not respond to home remedies or over the counter remedies, you should visit a doctor or dermatologist for further advice. Remember, the sooner you get rid of your acne, the less chance you have of having scars afterwards. You can treat scarring with laser treatment but it can be costly. Acne is treatable but, because everyone’s acne is different and responds to different cures, you might have to a try a few before you find the one that works for you.

Acne is a very common condition of the skin especially during adolescence. 4 out of 5 teenagers has or had experienced having acne. Acne can appear as blackheads or whiteheads at first then it start to become red and it then becomes a pimple. The acne can become severe where about 70% of the facial skin is covered by it. And it can not just be found on the face but it is also commonly found on the back, chest and shoulders. The remedy for acne can be found at your home. You don’t really need to spend a lot of money buying those expensive products as there are natural acne treatments as well, although this is true that there are some very effective products out there. Natural remedies are gaining more popularity as more people get scared of using too much chemicals on their body. The best of all natural cleanser is clean water. Yes, water helps your body to eliminate toxins. People often neglect the importance of water but if you drink plenty of water everyday, you will not only have better looking skin but you would be healthier too. Water can not be replicated by other drinks with its cleansing properties so try to drink at least 6 glasses of pure water every day and you will surely be amazed at how it gets rid of your acne. Here are other natural acne treatments that you can try. They can work wonders !- Apply cooked oatmeal on your face and let it sit for 15 minutes then wash.- Garlic cloves can be used by rubbing it to your acne a few times a day.- Avocado can also be applied like a facial mask.- Rub tea tree oil on the affected area.- Use rose water and add the same amount of lemon juice. Rub it on your face and let it sit for 30 minutes. Do this every day for 15 days !These are just few tips if you want to go natural and not spend money on specific acne treatments. However, you may know that acne treatments containing only natural ingredients are also available on the market. You may decide to check some as they are gentle enough to most skin types and do not contain harsh chemicals that could irritate your skin. You can also opt for advanced formulas that combines scientifically researched compounds and natural ingredients to give you optimal results on your quest to get rid of acne. Some treatments now actually include natural skin care supplements that balance your body from the inside to control hormonal levels among other internal issues, that could cause acne (it takes about two to three weeks for acne to become visible as a pimple at the surface of your skin, the process first occur inside).

Acne is a concern frequent to youth and unfortunately, so are cosmetics. Girls try cosmetics in their early teens and a lot of them tend to go a little overboard in the way they use cosmetics. They may not know it then, but cosmetics are part of the top causes of acne and can aggravate an acne outbreak, even if they haven’t caused it.During adolescence, a person’s body undergoes a number of hormonal changes that lead to deposits of oil in the pores of the skin. These oily pores attract dirt, grime and dust from the atmosphere and get clogged up, which then leads to acne, spots, pimples, blemishes, whiteheads and blackheads. The use of cosmetics in this case is similar to exposure to atmospheric pollutants. They too clog up the pores on the surface of the skin and can lead to acne.Cosmetics that contain shimmering facial colors usually contain mineral called mica that is known to cause skin irritations and can also clog pores of your skin. There are also other additives present in the coloring of cosmetics like coal tar derivatives, carmine and heavy cream that can also clog skin pores and cause irritation. It is also important to remember that the more the shine a lipstick has, the more is the comedogenic content in it and more is the likelihood that it will clog your pores. Also be wary of eye creams can contain heavy amounts of moisturizers compared to regular creams and lotions. They pose a risk of clogging pores in the surrounding facial areas. If you have to use cosmetics, use products that are labeled non-comedogenic or oil-free. Also, whenever you use cosmetics, ensure that you clean it off thoroughly before going to bed. If left overnight, chances are very high that cosmetics will clog your pores. Cleansing is always the first step as for acne treatments. It prepares the skin to receive the additional products that your acne system delivers such as a toner and a protection or repairing lotion. Be sure to use a good cleanser, and remove all your makeup before applying your acne treatment.Cosmetics are not the only cause of acne. There are many other pollutants that our skin has to face each day. IF all these external impurities can be related to acne, there are also some internal toxins inside our body that can lead to acne. Drinking water throughout the day eliminates the toxins. Another internal factor, which is a main acne factor, is hormonal imbalance. This is what we experience when we are teens with puberty, adult women also go through many hormonal changes during their lives. There are now some acne supplements on the market that help to control and restore hormonal balance inside the body to prevent acne.

In my opinion, acne has to be one of the most annoying conditions on this planet. However, what is even more annoying is rushing out to your local pharmacy, or skin care store after you just had a blemish breakout, to get extremely overwhelmed by the amount of acne products that are stacked on the store shelves!
Do you happen to notice that most, if not all, of these blemish battling products claim that with a couple of applications, they may virtually eliminate the most stubborn acne-prone skin condition? Well if that were true, I wouldn’t be sitting here writing this article.
The reality about many of the skin care items that are available at your retail store, are that they are developed to target the mass audience, which means they don’t have a long-term care system in place, or treatment plan to help you become free and clear of your pimples and zits.
The concentrations of medication are very low, and in most cases they will include ingredients that may not work for all skin types. Read the labels on these over-the-counter cleansers, creams, and lotions, and you will more than likely notice that they claim to be good for all skin types, such as sensitive skin, normal and oily skin! What this means is they add ingredients in very low levels of medicinal ingredients that will be ok for everybody, and normally only work for individuals with mild acne!
If you truly want to eliminate your medium to severe acne condition for good, you should first consult your local dermatologist and find out what your skin type is, and the severity of your acne. It’s also important to find out if you have any allergies, or anything else that may cause you to have any reactions to certain medications. Even if cleansers claim that they are mild and safe for sensitive skin, they may include certain ingredients that you personally may react to when applying them to your face or body.
Eliminating Bacteria Alone Is Not The Solution To Preventing Your Acne!
A facial cleansing gel, or many of the cream gels that declare that they eliminate surface bacteria, are only targeting one root of your problem, and you need do more than just get rid of increased bacterial growth on the surface of your skin.
A quality topical cream that is designed to help your problem conditions are ones that include dermatological grade medication to kill bacteria, and include oil absorbing ingredients to properly clear and clean your pores of trapped dirt and oil that these germs feeds on! A good lotion or cleanser designed for more severe acne conditions don’t offer short-term claims, they provide long-term solutions to eliminating your current breakouts, and also provide prevention methods for any future development of blemishes and unsightly pimples.
Acne Treatments Should Be As Clear As A Healthy Complexion!
You see television commercials, and read magazines telling you about newly developed antibiotics, or explaining the benefits of using products with salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and many other items such as the revolutionary accutane, that your head feels like it’s stuck in your washer spin cycle!
With all this media hype it’s really hard to understand what is right for you, and seeing a physician or dermatologist sometimes makes your decision more confusing when they even promote their preferred products!
In my opinion, the proof is in the testimonials and referrals. It’s funny that many individuals don’t have a problem with asking a friend or even a stranger where they purchased their perfume or where they got their hair done, but when it comes to asking someone how they keep their skin looking so great, they can’t come around to asking! It seems to be a taboo or something of that nature, I can’t explain it myself.
I suggest if you see or know someone personally that has clear skin, ask him or her how he or she maintains his or her complexion. Don’t settle for the family genes line, get inside their head and find out what they eat, how they cleanse, right down to their utmost skin care secrets. You may be surprised that many of them have a wash system, cleansing regime, or some are currently using the acne solution products that are widely offered through online Acne Skin Care Suppliers.
Find out what products they’re using, and also ask them how you can obtain these products if you have never heard of them before. Products recommended from a valued source other than the media offers more significance to that particular acne moisturizer, exfoliating cleanser, or treatment lotions they’re using.
The bottom line is that you should not have to be confused about finding the right acne treatment for your specific conditions. After doing some research with your doctor, reading article sources online, and talking to your friends and family, you will hopefully narrow it down to your best solution.
Remember that an acne cream, gel, or lotion is only as good as the concentration of medicines in them, and other contributing factors you should highly research and consider are quality exfoliating and pore clearing ingredients, along with safe antioxidants that also work inside your body, and will be a hot topic in another article.

Life as a teenager is never easy. There’s the struggle with self image, self esteem, self doubt and finding you own identity. Not to mention there is always the unavoidable cruelty and judgement of other teens if you’re a little “different”. That’s what made growing up with acne so hard for me, and I’m sure for the countless other teenagers out there afflicted with persistent facial acne.
Teen Acne : My Story
My lifelong battle (hence far) started at the ripe young age of 14. Up until then I had enjoyed the even toned, glowing and blemish free skin of youth. Just when looks started to really matter to me, and for that matter to all of my adolescent peers, I experienced my first acne breakout. I was in a frenzy. How cruel could nature be? Wasn’t it enough that I was filling out, growing breasts and becoming a mature, curvy “woman” all of a sudden?
Adding to this sudden onslaught of a hormonally charged set of physical changes seemed like more than I could handle. Especially when the “first little breakout” never went away, and consistently got worse no matter what I used on my face. What started as a few pimples localized only to my chin began to manifest itself in deeper, more cyst-like pustules that were actually painful, and began to disseminate to my nose, forehead and cheeks like wildfire.
My hormones had taken off full throttle in a matter of a few weeks, and by the time I turned 15, I had already been living with moderate to severe acne for several months. To add insult to injury, apparently I was one of the first teens in my small ninth grade class to actually have real (and very noticeable) problems with acne. Of course, my classmates were soon to follow, but up until then I was the unlucky “pioneer” of the teen acne acedemic!
I was a painfully shy teen to begin with, so adding chronic and many times severe acne to my situation only made me more self conscious. I remember countless days of waking up with an especially bad skin day, most of the time pinpointed to certain times in my menstrual cycle, and not wanting to go to school simply because I felt as though I looked like a “freak” or a “monster”.
I completely withdrew myself from socialization in most cases, making my high school years barely tolerable. I’m not blaming all of my high school angst on acne, but it certainly added to my already negative perception of myself. It made me feel outwardly ugly and ashamed of who I was.
I do feel that acne had a profound impact on my self image during high school, and prevented me from enjoying my youth time and time again. Silly? Maybe, but I think we all know how rough adolescence can be already. Something like acne can really exacerbate any self esteem and socialization issues during this awkward period of adjustment.
The Acne Treatments Available “Back Then”
I tried all of the over the counter acne creams, cleansers and cleansing pads, but to no avail. None of them worked on my skin to clear the acne. In fact, back in the late eighties and early nineties, most over the counter acne products were very harsh and drying. Needless to say, many times I ended up with dry, red peeling skin on top of acne bumps. Couple that with awkward teenage makeup application and the heavy powders and foundations that were available back then (when a matte finish was the makeup style), and what you have is not a pretty sight.
I could get into my vicious cycle of dermatologist administered treatments starting at the age of sixteen, but that is just whole different article all together. The bottom line is, many of the treatments available only address the problem of acne temporarily, and become worthless once treatment is stopped. They also have side effects.
Let’s just say, I’m glad I now enjoy virtually pimple free skin at the age of 31 through a series of hit and miss acne treatments, I think I’ve finally found my “true skin”.
